Grâce à son travail de diplôme Bachelor en Photographie 2015 de l'ECAL, Etienne Malapert bénéficie d'une première exposition monographique dans le cadre des Journées photographiques de Bienne (jusqu'au 22 mai 2016).

Son travail s'articule autour d'un reportage aux Emirats arabes unis (EAU). En 2006, les EAU décident d’entreprendre le projet de faire pousser une ville entière en plein désert. Masdar City, catégorisée «ville verte», a pour but premier d’atteindre le 0% d’émission de CO2. Masdar est un bon exemple de l’aménagement du territoire liant l’architecture et la technologie environnementale en prévision de «l’après pétrole».

    아마도 대한민국의 게임 관계자 및 골수 온라인게임 유저들이라면 두말할 필요도 없이 엔씨소프트의 ‘리니지’를 첫 번째로 꼽을 것이다. 리니지의 성공과 한국 온라인 게임의 발전에 대한 과거사를 풀어보라면 하루 이틀로는 설명이 부족할 정도로 리니지는 한국 게임계가 구축되고 한국이 온라인게임 강국으로 발전하는데 막대한 영향력을 발휘했다.

    물론 화려한 성공의 이면을 보면 ‘현질(게임머니 현금거래)’, ‘오토(자동사냥프로그램)’, ‘게임 폐인 양성’ 등 온라인 게임이 가지는 모든 문제점들도 ‘리니지’와 함께 시작됐다. 그리고 이 문제들은 아직도 모든 온라인 게임이 풀어야 하는 숙제로 남아있다.

    이렇게 음과 양 모두 화려한 업적(?)을 만들어왔던 리니지의 역사는 이미 끝난 과거의 이야기가 아니다. 여전히 리니지는 잘 나가는 온라인게임이며, 지금도 리니지를 즐기고 있는 유저들을 빼내기 위해 ‘포스트 리니지’를 표방하는 신작들이 계속해서 등장하고 있다.

    리니지 입장에서 보면 새로운 기술, 첨단 기능으로 무장한 경쟁작들이 등장한 셈이다. 그런데 아이러니하게도 이 게임들이 등장한 후에 오히려 리니지의 인기가 올라갔다. 2010년 1월 현재, 리니지의 최대 동시접속자는 오히려 늘었다.

    엔씨소프트 관계자에 따르면 작년 말 ‘비공식 자료로 리니지의 최대 동접이 18만명을 넘겼다’고 한다. WOW도 최근 동접 10만을 넘지 못하는 일이 많다는데 서비스 11년이 지난 리니지가 무려 18만이란다.

    과연 사실일까? 1월 12일 화요일 평일 저녁에 직접 확인해봤다. 테스트서버를 제외한 48개 서버의 접속자를 확인한 결과 약 15만명이 집계됐다. 특별한 이벤트도 없는 평일에 이 정도라면 사람이 몰리는 주말, 또는 게임 이벤트가 있는 날이면 최대 동접 18만명도 충분할 것이다. 경쟁작들이 나왔는데 오히려 리니지 인기가 올라가다니, 왜 이런 일이 생기고 있을까?

    리니지류 신작들의 등장, 향수만 심어주고 유저들은 불만 가득

    2008년 R2를 시작으로 ‘리니지 따라하기’ 게임들이 등장했다. 2009년에는 ‘콜오브카오스’, ‘카로스온라인’이 선보이며, 대놓고 ‘리니지와 비슷한 게임입니다.’라는 홍보 멘트를 뿌렸다.

    이들은 리니지와 흡사한 게임성, 단순하고 쉬운 조작성, 리니지보다는 확실히 향상된 그래픽을 내세우며 유저들을 유혹했다. 누구나 알고 있지만 쉬쉬하는 리니지류 게임의 가장 큰 특징인 ‘게임으로 짭짤한 현금을 만질 수 있다’는 내용도 은연중 내비친다.

    오픈과 동시에 엄청난 유저들이 몰렸다. 오픈 후 며칠 만에 동시접속자 3-5만을 넘겼으니 출발은 대성공인 셈. 그러나 시간이 갈수록 유저들은 빠져나갔다. 리니지와 비슷한 게임을 계정비 없이 즐길 수 있기를 바랬던 유저들은 끝내 만족하지 못하고 하나둘 떠나갔고, 초반 게임 현금거래를 노리고 들어온 작업장 세력도 더 이상 수익이 나오지 않아 등을 돌렸다. 현재는 초기에 비해 반의 반 이하로 유저수가 감소했다고 전해지고 있다.

    ‘R2’는 유저 감소에 따라 지난 12월 대규모 서버통합으로 5개의 서버가 사라졌다. ‘콜오브카오스’는 OBT를 시작하고 최대 동접 3만명을 기록하기도 했으나, 지난 12월에 6개 서버에서 절반으로 줄였다. 이후 정식 서비스를 시작하며 꾸준히 업데이트를 계속하고 있지만 실효과는 크지 않은 것으로 나타나고 있다. KTH가 서비스하는 ‘카로스 온라인’의 상황도 별반 다르지 않다. 오픈과 동시에 4만 5천명이라는 놀라운 동접 수치를 기록했지만, 이후 유저들은 계속 이탈하고 있으며 1월초 캐쉬아이템 판매가 시작됐고 곧 PC방 유료모델이 등장하면 유저들의 이탈은 더욱더 심화될 것으로 예상된다.

    이렇게 발길을 돌리는 유저들은 말한다. ‘기대 이하였고 리니지보다 재미 없었다.’고.. 인터페이스 구성부터 라우풀/카오틱 시스템, 아이템의 강화 주문서, 시점방향 등 게임 대부분에서 리니지의 모습을 닮아있지만 게임을 할 수록 리니지보다 못하다고 느끼게 된다는 것.

    리니지가 가지고 있는 파이를 나눠먹겠다고 등장했지만, 저급한 운영, 부족한 콘텐츠, 오픈 이후 계속 발견되고 있으며 고쳐지지 않는 버그들, 오토 및 작업장에 의해 게임 황폐화, 캐시아이템 등장 이후 게임경제 기반의 붕괴 등 여러가지 이유로 유저들은 발길을 돌리고 있는 상황이다.

    물론 현재도 R2, 콜오브카오스, 카로스온라인을 재밌게 즐기고 있는 유저들은 적지 않다. 그러나 그보다 많은 사람들이 '포스트 리니지'를 외쳤던 이 게임들을 리니지보다 못하다고 평가했고 뒤돌아섰다. 그리고 이들은 '정액요금을 내더라도 리니지를 다시 하는게 더 재밌겠다'고 말하며 리니지로 회귀하고 있다. 리니지 아류작들이 오히려 리니지를 살찌우는 기현상이 나타나고 있는 셈이다.

    낮아진 진입장벽, 다시 해볼만한 리니지

    MMORPG가 가지는 대표적인 특징이 '더 많은 시간을 투자할수록 남들보다 강해진다.'는 점이다. 내가 3년 동안 키워온 캐릭터가 한 달전에 시작한 캐릭터와 차이가 없다면 그만큼 억울한 일이 어딨겠나. 리니지와 같이 육성 시간, 투자한 노력에 비례해 캐릭터간 능력치에 큰 차이를 보여주는 게임에서는 이 특징이 곧 게임의 근간이라고 말할 수 있다.

    그러나 반대로 이제 게임을 시작해서 소위 '지존'이 되겠다는 원대한 목표(?)를 꿈꾸는 유저에게는 너무나 가혹한 특징이기도 하다. 2005년 당시 최고 레벨이었던 '포세이든'이 80레벨을 찍기 위해 5년이 걸렸다고 한다. 지금 시작해서 80레벨을 만들기 위해 똑같이 5년이 걸린다면 당신은 리니지를 다시 시작할 수 있을까? 더군다나 현재 최고레벨 캐릭터가 게임을 포기하지 않는 한 그 간극은 영원히 줄어들지 않는데도? 대부분의 유저들은 따라갈 수 없기에 포기하게 될 것이고 신규 유저의 숫자는 계속해서 줄어들 것이다.

    때문에 MMORPG에서는 이 사이에서 절충안을 찾는다. 새로운 서버를 열어서 동등한 시작 조건을 준다거나, 최고레벨 제한을 걸고 유저들간의 차이가 크게 벌어지지 않게 한다거나, 다양한 편의 시스템을 만들어 레벨업 속도를 차등 적용하기도 한다.

    최근 리니지의 접속자가 계속해서 증가하게 된 시발점이 '리니지 아류작들을 떠난 유저들'이었다면, 그 유저들을 붙잡아 둔 것은 위에서 말한 것과 같은 '리니지의 신규 유저 정책'이라 말할 수 있다.

    MMORPG에서 '새로운 서버'는 모든 유저에게 평등한 시작 조건을 준다. 투자한 시간만큼 자신의 캐릭터가 강해지고, 이 캐릭터들이 모여 혈맹(길드)를 만들고, 이 혈맹이 공선전을 통해 성을 차지하고, 그를 통해 이득을 보면서 혈맹사이에 이해관계가 얽히는 커뮤니티 지향 MMORPG에서 '신서버'가 뜻하는 것은 곧 '신세계'라 할 수 있다. 그리고 이런 특징 때문에 모든 온라인게임을 통털어 신규서버 오픈 시 가장 뜨거운 반응이 나타나는 게임이 바로 '리니지'이다.

    실제로 이번 접속자 조사에서 드러난 것 처럼 최근에 오픈한 '오크' 서버는 다른 서버에 비해 두배 이상 많은 접속자를 보여주고 있는데, 게임에서 만난 적지 않은 유저들이 '콜오브카오스', '카로스 온라인'을 해봤다고 전하고 있다.

    또한 리니지에서는 그동안 꾸준한 업데이트를 통해 신규유저들을 위한 다양한 레벨업 편의 시스템을 만들어왔다. 전투 물약, 미니 게임을 통한 경험치 +20% 보상 시스템, 중고레벨(40~52) 유저들을 위해 기존 던전을 고효율 던전으로 리뉴얼, 49레벨부터 경험치 보너스를 받을 수 있는 버프, 요리 버프를 이용한 경험치 보너스 추가하며 레벨업을 보다 쉽게 할 수 있도록 변경해왔다.
